The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults

Note for 2020: Adult Sacramental Preparation is offered in-person, hybrid, or digitally.

Embracing Christian Catholic faith can be like falling in love: attraction, spending time together, commitment. The church is the people of God, and we are always under construction! Come just as you are, and be welcome here. Grow more deeply in Catholic faith through:

  • Liturgy: participating in Sunday worship;
  • Sponsorship: connecting with a mentor;
  • Formation: group and individual learning.

What is Different This Year, and How Will We Do This Safely?

St. Francis Xavier’s currently has 11 registered candidates seeking Sacraments of Initiation and anticipates additional inquiries and registrations. Our plan for RCIA this year is a combination of: 1) small, approximately monthly, in-person gatherings; 2) coordination of 1:1 sponsor support for candidates (both in-person and remotely); 3) observance of the appropriate liturgical rites (e.g. dismissals, Rite of Welcome, Rite of Sending, etc.) in our regular schedule of Masses according to the most current protocols and directive regarding liturgy; 4) provision of appropriate formation content via digital and non-gathered technologies (i.e. pod-casts, recorded and live videos, etc.); 5) for persons unable or unwilling to participate in any kind of in-person gathering, we will be offering an adaptation of the full preparation experience remotely and digitally, including the small, monthly in-person gatherings, by leveraging AV and “Zoom” style technology; 6) postal mail delivery of faith formation content (e.g. “Catholic Update” articles, prayer cards, etc.) to encourage the development of the home church apart from both in-person formation and digital offerings.

We believe that approach will hold up in the face of any restrictions short of a stay-at-home order. In the event of a stay-at-home order, most of the primary plan remains in-tact while any and all in-person gatherings are cancelled for the duration of the order.

Per the Bishop’s directives, St. Francis Xavier staff will regularly check with our local schools and health department for guidance. All in-person gatherings will be less than 50 people. As required by local directives, masks will be worn by everyone and consideration will be given to provide for physical distancing whenever possible. Pick up and drop off times will be staggered to avoid large gatherings of people. Classroom/meeting room surfaces will be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized after each session in a cooperative effort between parish staff and specific program volunteers. No refreshments will be provided in group meetings, and no in-person formation meetings, classes, or events will be held that exceed 50 people.
